Privacy policy

YieldBadger (yieldbadger.com) is operated by ToUpper LLC ("we", "us"). We built it to need as little information about you as possible: there are no accounts, no sign-ups and no email lists.
What we collect
Numbers you type into calculators
Calculations run in your browser. The values you enter are kept in the page address (so you can share or bookmark a deal) and are not sent to or stored on our servers.
Addresses, ZIP codes and your location
- When you look up rent or local data by ZIP code, we receive the ZIP code to return the data.
- When you enter a street address, our server forwards it to the U.S. Census Bureau geocoder to find its ZIP code. We use only the ZIP code; we do not store or log the address, and it is never put in the page address.
- If you choose “Use my location,” your browser asks your permission, then sends your approximate coordinates to our server, which asks the Census Bureau for the ZIP code. We do not store or log the coordinates.
Rents you share
If you use “Share your rent,” we store what you enter: ZIP code, bedrooms, bathrooms, property type, square feet (if given), monthly rent and the month it applies to. The form does not ask for your name, email, phone number or street address.
- To limit spam, we keep a one-way, salted hash of your IP address with the submission. The hash changes every day, cannot be turned back into your IP address, and we never store the IP address itself.
- Submissions are checked automatically against published rent data and other submissions; some are reviewed by us. Implausible or repeated ones are discarded.
- We never show individual submissions. In the future we may publish totals (such as the median rent) for a ZIP code and bedroom count, but only once at least five approved submissions exist for it, so no single rent can be picked out.
- Submissions are kept in our database and its backups to build those totals. Because we can't link a submission to you, we can't find or delete a specific one on request.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages and tools are used (for example, that a rent estimate was run for a state and bedroom count). We never send addresses, ZIP codes or anything you type to Google Analytics. Google Analytics uses cookies and similar technologies; see how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
Advertising
We show ads through Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies to serve ads based on your visits to this and other websites. You can turn off personalized ads in My Ad Center or opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies at aboutads.info.
Server logs
Like most websites, our servers may briefly record technical information such as IP address, browser type and the page requested, to keep the site running and secure. We do not use it to identify you.
Your choices
- Visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland are asked for consent before analytics or advertising cookies are used, and can change their choice at any time.
- U.S. visitors can opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information for targeted advertising, as provided by state privacy laws. We honor the Global Privacy Control signal: if your browser sends it, ads are not personalized.
- You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings.
What we don't do
- We don't sell personal information for money.
- We don't ask for your name, email address, phone number or street address in any form.
- We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13.
Service providers
Information is processed by the providers that run the site: Amazon Web Services (hosting), Google (analytics and advertising) and the U.S. Census Bureau (address and location lookups).
